There hasn't been an Election Night that I've been happy with since 2016, and while I hope 2024 will turn out differently, I have a strange feeling that we've already turned a corner in American politics. Win or lose, I always expected that fortunes could reverse themselves in the next election. These past four years have seem to have taken a real toll of our country. Between inflation, wars, and just friends and family members cutting people off online because they can't handle people who disagree with them, our country seems so much worse now than it did four years ago.
At the same time, after being more closely involved in local politics both in-person and online, I've felt a major vibe shift recently, particularly since Elon Musk took over Twitter. Four years ago, you couldn't even create an alternative like Twitter without it getting shut down. Now Twitter is called X, and speech is free again, like it or not. At the same time, I'm noticing people on the right aren't as afraid to stand up, speak out, and be open with who they're voting for than they were four years ago. I see more Trump signs, Trump hats, and Trump T-shirts out in the open than I had in 2020 or 2016.
So my prediction for this year — more of a hope, really — is that Donald Trump will make history and return to the White House. Republicans will take the Senate and hold on to the House, and Democrats will have to consider whether calling your opponents Nazis and Fascists for four years was the winning strategy they thought it was. Then maybe in 2028, they can get their act together and hold actual primaries and caucuses instead of a last-minute coronation for their candidate. Wouldn't that be something?
